Eco-approach for pharmaceutical removal: Thermochemical waste valorisation, biochar adsorption and electro-assisted regeneration

In the present research, an eco-approach for removal of pharmaceuticals from aqueous environment was developed under de principles circular economy. Therefore, eco-friendly adsorbent, biochar, synthesized by thermochemical valorisation rice production waste. The bran pyrolyzed at different temperatures (300–750°C) and a thermal post-treatment evaluated with aim to investigate its impact on characteristics chemical composition biochars. obtained biochars were assayed model target pollutant, fluoxetine (FLX), biochar adsorption process characterized in detail. after pyrolysis 500°C autoclave (BC500A) achieved highest pollutant (92.6%). pseudo-2nd order kinetic Freundlich isotherm described well process, primary mechanism explained electrostatic attractions. After that, regeneration this adsorbent innovative electro-Fenton-like using peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidant agent. To our knowledge, is first attempt regenerate combined technology. optimization operational variables such current intensity, PMS/FLX ratio, electrode material, addition enhancing agents (Fe citric acid) evaluated. spent effectively accomplished optimal conditions (150 mA, 75/1 PMS/FLX, 0.15 mM acid). No external Fe necessary because metal content enough reaction take place. Finally, 5 cycles adsorption-regeneration performed demonstrating viability system. Accordingly, proposed approach fits economy, global wastes achieved.
